WYD08 - CWL Activities and Events

As we prepare to be swept along with the excitement of WYD 2008, CWL Sydney has received many invitations to attend WYD events.

On Friday evening 11th July the Sisters of Saint Joseph and the Mary MacKillop World Youth Day Committee hosted the Official Opening of the Special Exhibition. In the footsteps of Mary MacKillop: Australia's Saint.
The program included the welcoming voices of the Mary MacKillop East Timor Choir, followed by the official welcome by Sister Monica Cavanagh (Sisters of Saint Joseph WYD Liaison).

Composer and singer Trish Watts, inspired by the life of Mary MacKillop introduced and performed her World Youth Day song "Guide our Feet".
Antonio de Padua Martins from East Timor shared his story with the guests.
Antonio is a talented musician and performed at the CWL Sydney fundraising luncheon at Parliament House in 2005 when Sydney Archdiocese supported the Mary MacKillop Institute East Timor (MMET) in their efforts to build a school in the hills of East Timor.

Curator of the exhibition Edwina Huntley spoke of the archival material sourced for this special presentation - such as Mary's rosary beads, her writing desk, journals and letters.

Edwina introduced the Delezio family who prayed for the intercession of Blessed Mary MacKillop when Sophie was undergoing surgery after receiving life threatening injuries in two car accidents. Sophie's parents then "cut the ribbon" to open the Exhibition.

The Exhibition will be a highlight for pilgrims visiting MacKillop Place to pray before the resting place of this great Australian woman.
Mary stands as an example of great courage and trust in God - as she lived out her vocation in loving and compassionate care of those in need.

CWL Sydney supported the WYD Mary MacKillop events program through a donation to assist with the production of a prayer card to be distributed to pilgrims visiting during this WYD 2008.

It was a wonderful evening to share the spirit of love and joy with all present and to welcome the young people of East Timor to Sydney.
