"People often ask me," says champion endurance swimmer Susie Maroney: "Why do I swim so far? why do I put my body through the pain?
"I guess it comes down to love - a love of water and of setting goals and the wonderful satisfaction of reaching these goals.
"There is also a love for my family, my coach and friends who support me no matter what."
Susie was addressing a Catholic Women's League luncheon at Parliament House to raise funds for the Mary MacKillop Institute and its work in East Timor.
The $5000 raised will help in the building of a school in Lau-Vou, in East Timor's Gugleur district, and to give children there the oppor-tunity to learn to read and write.
Susie told lunch guests she could think of no cause more worthy than "to bring the children of East Timor the magic of books and the magic carpet of imagination and learning that they take you on".
"I don't think we could wish for a better venture," she said.
