OPENING MASS: The retiring national president of the Catholic Women's League Australia, Mrs Thora Regan, lead the procession out of St Christopher's Cathedral, Canberra, at the end of the league's national conference Mass, which was celebrated by the Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn, Archbishop Francis Carroll.

More than 400 women, including delegates from New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Tonga, attended the conference, which was opened by the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Ambrose de Paoli.

The Bishop of Port Pirie, Bishop Eugene Hurley, Sr Josephine Mitchell of the Institute for East Timorese Studies, and Prof Hilary Charlesworth, director of the Centre for International Governance and Justice at the Australian National University, were among the keynote speakers.
