The Heart of the
Family in Crisis
A Forum for Women
More than 100 people attended a city forum that addressed some
of the issues that challenge families in today's changing
society.
The forum, held at the NSW Leagues Club on 8 July 2006, featured High
Court Justice Jenny Boland and clinical psychologist Fr. Michael
Szyjan.
It was coordinated by the Catholic Women's League, St.
Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Women's Organisation and
Catholic Communications.
Justice Boland and Fr. Michael discussed a host of issues that
impact on family relationships and reveal an ever-changing
society. Justice Boland drew on her judicial insight to address
such concerns such as "no fault" divorce, pre-marital
co-habitation, the recent Family Law reforms and the growing
necessity for two-income families.
She said that, despite a changing society, the position of the
family unit remains crucial.
Fr. Michael spoke from a pastoral and psychological perspective,
commenting on how we learn to be human within the family.
He said that the main problems that face families are divorce and
juvenile delinquency. Many people are putting personal fulfilment
first and this can lead to family instability, according to Fr.
Michael.
